Advertising Specialty Institute Inc
In show business the terms “Professional” and its evil-twin “Unprofessional” are used with such frequency, and to describe so many different spheres of an actor’s vocation, that their meaning has become unclear. This seven-part series is meant to identify, define and comment on the principal categories that can be used to denote the differences between an amateur and a professional actor. Though you may not yet have fully realized the potential of each category, it is by the recognizing and pursuing each one that sets you apart as a professional. The third category is business expertise.
Creating, “You Inc.”
If you were a computer programmer, an accountant or a secretary and were hired by, say, Apple Corp., you would be given a specific job and then placed in the organization. Since you focused solely on your specialty, you wouldn’t have to worry about the additional aspects of the company because you knew others were responsible for them. This, of course, doesn’t exist for the actor; you are the CEO and the secretary, the computer programmer and the accountant.
So, approaching your career as a business is a critical step in becoming a professional. That said, creating a workable and sustainable “company office” is vital to your success in handling the myriad of tasks needed to keep your career running smoothly. Setting up a dedicated space to work in will not only benefit you in terms of focus and efficiency, but you can write it off on your taxes…always a good thing. Also, buying the right equipment and learning how to use it will give you the flexibility to excel in the many different jobs you’ll need to do.
