One drug costs about $2,000 for a single injection. Another – administered in the same manner and on the same schedule – costs around $50. The company that manufactures both drugs has argued for five years that the more expensive drug is the only appropriate choice for treating neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the so-called “wet” form of macular degeneration.
In a clear example of “off-label” use (and before the more expensive agent even hit the market) physicians started treating wet macular degeneration with the cheaper drug when clinical studies demonstrated that it worked.
Different Drugs, Different Indications
Genentech, a subsidiary of Roche, developed bevacizumab (Avastin) for treating certain kinds of cancer, an indication that was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2004. Ranibizumab (Lucentis) – another Genentech development – received the nod from the FDA in 2006 for treating neovascular AMD, a condition that threatens the sight of 250,000 Americans each year, according to Dr. Paul Sieving of the National Eye Institute.
