Canadian Institute For International Studies
On August 10, 2008, an amendment to the Museums Act established the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. The museum will be Canada's fifth National Museum and the only one outside of Canada's Capital region.
Despite the fact that Winnipeg is ideally located in the center of the continent and is a major settlement area for new immigrants, the site was not chosen by the Government of Canada, rather the concept originated with Issy Asper, a Winnipeg media magnate.
After his death, in 2003, the ongoing drive to make the museum a reality fell to his family, most notably his daughter, Gail Asper. Federal, City of Winnipeg and Manitoba governments as well as private contributors have donated to the 310 million dollar project, with the Federal Government agreeing to fund operating expenses.
