Thirty years ago, the hottest ticket in New York wasn’t for a Broadway show. The King Tut exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art had people lining up for hours in order to get a ticket to the timed entrance for a gander at the King’s trinkets. The exhibit was placed in the gallery area at the Met and although the area was crowded, the individual pieces that were shown were spectacular.
The New Exhibit -- King Tut and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs
Now King Tut has returned to New York starting on April 23, 2010. However, he has brought a slightly different configuration of ornaments and artifacts along -- there are less of his and more of the other pharaohs. The new exhibit, titled King Tut and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs, includes statues and objects from the reign of Ramses and other rulers of the kingdom by the Nile. There are also several replicas of the larger pieces – not every item will be 3000 years old. This huge exhibit has been traveling the North American continent for several years. It has been seen in Miami, Philadelphia, Toronto and San Francisco.
The big news is that the venue for this formidable exhibit is not one of New York’s famous museums, but a new space carved out of the old New York Times building right in the heart of Broadway. Called the Discovery Exposition Center, it is a space designed specifically for traveling exhibits and has already hosted the Titanic exhibit. The King Tut exhibit takes up at least ten rooms of display space.
