It’s been called the City by the Bay, Frisco and the place where Tony Bennett left his heart. But whatever you call it, the city of San Francisco is known throughout the world for its distinct neighborhoods, fantastic architecture and one-of-a-kind weather. Given the city’s uniqueness, it’s important to better understand its culture, sense of place and history before visiting.

The basics

San Francisco is the cultural, economic and historical heart of the San Francisco Bay Area. Transportation in the city and region is provided by three international airports (San Francisco International, Oakland International, and Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International), Amtrak, the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) railway, bus, ferry service, cable cars and several major highways. San Francisco is famous for its foggy weather and mild climate.

The city of San Francisco is known for its diversity and liberal and tolerant atmosphere, especially of LGBT people. Thus it is important to keep an open and respectful mind while visiting. Finally, San Francisco can be very expensive, so budget cautiously.
