Held every year on Dec 01, the twelfth anniversary of World AIDS Day 2010, is placing the emphasis on universal access to HIV and AIDS treatment for everyone. This year's theme for World AIDS day is to alert global leaders to the need for additional steps in the fight against AIDS and HIV.

UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS, claims that over 33 million people worldwide are currently living with HIV. In 2009, the organization estimated that another 2.6 million people had been newly infected with the HIV virus.

Although World AIDS Day validates the urgency of combating this disease, it is equally crucial to celebrate the good. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is doing just that by highlighting the successful breakthrough research on HIV and AIDS, conducted by several worldwide entities in 2010.
