Despite the depressed economic climate new art galleries continue to open in the UK. The Turner Contemporary has operated in a variety of temporary venues in the Margate area since its establishment in 2001. During that time the Turner has mounted a remarkable programme of exhibitions featuring international artists such as Tracey Emin, Bethan Huws and Mike Nelson. In April 2011 the Turner moved into its new home designed by David Chipperfield RA. The new building provides a wonderful contrast between the Victorian sea front architecture and the modern gallery.

Why Turner? Why Margate?

Turner had strong ties to this seaside town. From the age of 11 he went to school in Margate, and as an adult was a frequent visitor, attracted by the quality of the Thanet light.
