The newspaper industry is debating what government role, if any, should be part of the future of journalism. Much of the discussion over government intervention involves opinions on the current state of newspapers and what the relationship to regulatory authorities should be.
Those in and outside of newspapers are now reviewing several proposed steps in a document from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission in a range of areas. The agency has raised the possibility of direct or indirect government subsidies for newspapers, a $5 to $7 license fee for Internet service providers to collect on accounts per subscriber for a establishing a national local news fund, tax credits for hiring reporters, vouchers for the first $200 in donations to news organizations, Small Business Administration (SBA)-insured loans to fund startup nonprofit news organizations, and grants to universities and colleges to support investigative journalism.
