For high school students who are narrowing their college search choices, one of the biggest decisions is whether to choose a liberal arts college or a research institution. There are advantages and disadvantages of each, and some prospective students are probably better suited to one or the other. Here's what students should know about these two different types of higher education experiences.

Liberal Arts Colleges

Most liberal arts institutions have fewer than 5,000 students, and many are about the same size as a large high school. These colleges often only serve undergraduate students, although some also offer a limited number of graduate degrees. Most students at these schools are traditional students who are right out of high school and are 18-22 years old, and usually students at these schools live on or near campus.

Per the name, these colleges focus on a liberal arts education, which means that all students (including those who major in areas like science and math) are expected to get a strong background in "human condition" types of subjects, such as literature, history, philosophy, and the arts.
