Corita Kent was born in Iowa in 1918. After high school, she entered the Immaculate Heart of Mary Community in Los Angeles and became Sister Mary Corita. Starting in 1947, Sister Mary Corita taught art at Immaculate Heart College. In 1951, she earned a Master’s Degree in Art History from the University of Southern California and returned to Immaculate Heart to become the chairman of the college’s art department. In 1968, Sister Mary decided to leave the order. She moved to Boston in order to pursue her art full time.
