Political and educational leaders in Alaska have recognized the need to develop a unified career and technical education (CTE) plan that addresses the need to develop world class schools and respond to the current and projected workforce needs of the state. The promise of this work in progress is the ability of Alaska to build a CTE system that can prepare all Alaskans to attain a sustainable career.

The Promise of a Unified Career and Technical Education Plan

There have been a couple of efforts to address workforce development in Alaska in past couple of years. In 2007, the Alaska Gas Inducement Act (AGIA) was passed by the Legislature to promote construction of a major natural gas pipeline. The Department of Labor and Workforce (ADOLWD) Development realized a project of this magnitude would require the development of a skilled workforce to complete the project. The department developed the AGIA Training Strategic Plan to address this concern in 2007.
