National Emergency Communication Institute
The emergency room or ER is an institution of its own that truly has an open door policy. It is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week to those in need. Medical professionals must be available to assist individuals who have been involved in life threatening trauma. This could be as a result of intentional or unintentional acts. Victims of sexual assault may or may not have injuries that require medical attention. It is more likely that they will require specialized and focused care.
Violence Against Women
According to the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program, it was estimated that there were 89,000 forcible rapes in the United States in 2008. This statistic does not include many criminal acts that are used to define the broad term of sexual assault. Although rape and sexual assault are often associated with the female as the victim, it is understood that males can also be victimized. As one of the most underreported crimes it is no surprise that victims are often unaware of resources that are available within their own community.
