Aldrin was an astronaut on the Gemini XII and Apollo XI NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) space missions. As part of the Gemini XII mission, Aldrin achieved the first successful spacewalk and set a record of 5½ hours of extra vehicular activity (EVA). During the 1969 Apollo XI mission, which he participated in along with Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins, Aldrin became the second man in history to walk on the moon.
Aldrin’s Education and Preparation
Before he began his career with NASA, Aldrin served in the US Air Force and flew fighter jets during the Korean War. He graduated third in his class at West Point and he later graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Doctorate in Astronautics.
As an adept scuba diver, he was one of the first astronauts to be trained for weightlessness in space using scuba gear. As a result of his dives, one of the most famous of which was when he traveled to the bottom of the Atlantic to view wreckage of the Titanic, means that he has traveled higher and lower than anyone else on Earth. He has gone more than 250,000 miles into space and dived more than 2.5 miles to the bottom of the Atlantic. He has thus been dubbed “the man with the most ups and downs.”
